The Detroit of India
Pithampur, located in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, emerged as a planned industrial township in the 1980s. Developed by the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC), it was conceived to spur economic growth in the Malwa-Nimar region.
Today, Pithampur is home to over 40+ major manufacturing plants including automotive giants, pharmaceutical leaders, textile mills, and engineering units. It is often called the “Detroit of India” due to its concentration of automobile and auto-component manufacturing.
The industrial area spans roughly 2,500 hectares and includes a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), making it one of the most significant industrial corridors in central India.
